A trunk railway stops mid-construction when its chief engineer, Jonathan Finch, disappears. The company freezes the works and the head of it sends the footage of the accident to an old friend — Richard Stone, formerly of the army, currently not expecting any of this.
One frame holds Richard's attention: a stone monument that has no business being where it is. Working out where it came from is what pulls him in, and by the time he understands the question he's no longer investigating a disappearance. He's standing between an ancient civilisation and the people who want what it left behind.
